Okay, so I tested six pairs of jeans — three washes and three cuts — so you don’t have to spend hours in fitting rooms or deal with tons of returns.

The Washes I Compared
Light Wash
These give a fresh, casual vibe. I tried a pair from Madewell. They feel softer right away and look good with brighter tops. But, they show wear faster if you’re rough on them.
Medium Wash
My sweet spot. The Levi’s pair I tested has a nice balanced color that goes with almost everything in my closet. Not too bright, not too dark. Looks clean even after several washes.
Dark Wash
Great for a slightly dressed-up feel. The Abercrombie dark straight jeans hide stains better and pair nicely with blazers. They feel a bit stiffer at first but break in well.
The Cuts I Tested
Straight Leg
Hits at the ankle and gives a clean line. Most versatile for me. Easy to wear with sneakers or loafers. The Madewell pair in medium wash felt balanced and didn’t cling.
Wide Leg
Very comfortable for warmer days. The Mango wide-leg in dark wash flows nicely when I walk. Good for hiding thicker thighs but can feel too loose if the waist isn’t right.
Bootcut
Making a comeback and I get why. The Levi’s bootcut in light wash balances my proportions and works with both sneakers and boots. Slight flare at the bottom keeps it from looking dated.

My Favorite Pair
The medium wash straight leg from Levi’s won overall. It’s the one I keep reaching for. Comfortable from the first wear, good stretch, and the color goes with neutrals and brighter pieces.
If you only buy one new pair this season, start with the medium wash straight leg jeans. The other cuts and washes have their moments depending on the occasion. Which denim style do you wear most? Tell me in the comments!
